What an amazing little nation
Tomorrow at 9pm is the start of a new history programme about Wales. Yes, there have been a few over the years so why treat this one any differently. Well, I think on this occasion that we should.
'The Story of Wales' is something that BBC Wales should have done years ago, but waited until Scotland made one before splashing the cash - and cash they have indeed splashed. This is by all accounts a very polished series of 6 one hour programmes, giving hopefully a Welsh version of history that does not rely on Kings and Queens as a framework to base our history on.
I hope that many take the opportunity to watch this series, in the hope that the nation of Wales understand a little more about what an amazing country we live in. Particularly from say 1750 onwards, is there any other small nation that has had such a dynamic effect on the rest of the planet. I doubt it, so why not tune in on Monday 27th February and find out for yourself?

Hope you enjoy it and learn as much as I did along the way. Wales has a great story to tell the world. Huw (Edwards)

Thankfully we aren't being force fed the faux Brittania nonsense. But at the same time it's a shame that those foreigners are not being provided with what could be an eye opening educational experience.
Because no one care about your history
DeletePretty good, although much of the History i already knew a bit about, it's nice to see it from a Welsh view.
ReplyDeleteI was disappointed in the second programme, as it is clear that this series is not 'the Story of Wales' but the 'Brief History of Wales'. The production is excellent as is Huw Edwards, but it all feels too rushed. For instance, very little time was spent on Glyndwr tonight, almost as if he was already well known so need less of a mention. The fact that he came closer than anyone in deafeating the English crown had no mention, nor did the fact that he almost bankrupted England in his war and effectively invented a national trade deficit, as the English crown had to borrow to build the castles it took to conquer the NW. This series appears to be altogether too rushed, which is such a shame as the time and resources appeared to be there to get it right.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree, the series looks rushed, and its such a pity, how on earth can they cover the history of the Welsh nation in 6 programmes? BBC should have done better.
ReplyDeleteHow many times was this "history" plumped up with "epic", "global", "outward looking", "world class", "the facts arent clear but I would like to think....."???
ReplyDeleteThis over indulgent chest beating nationalistic drivel did not deserve prime time viewing....watching it you would think that Wales was the cradle of civilization
The cradle of the industrial revolution would be a fair comment, in conjunction with certain regions of England. So we have a history. Get over it!
ReplyDeleteMy criticism was of Mr Edwards "i will make you believe in yourselves at any cost" method of presenting this sprint through welsh history.
ReplyDeleteHe seemed more intent in convincing our people that we were (are) massive on a "global" (to state one of his much overused words)scale and that we count in the worlds economics - than presenting our history in any depth.
Wales isnt a "world player"....no matter how much Mr Edwards postures and propagates.....it was like looking at the "small man" syndrome.....if we shout it enough people will believe we are big.
We are not.....get over it.
