The sorry saga of Libya is a morbid spectacle. When the UN military intervention commenced, there was at least a coherent argument for what could be achieved. However, there were a lot of provisos and many nations around the World did not want to see yet another western invasion of Muslim/Arab state.
So where do we stand as we enter the month of June? Well, there is a stalemate between the warring factions and how anyone could argue that the current attacks fall within the agreed UN resolution is beyond me. This of course is not a defence of the appalling actions of Gaddafi and his henchmen, but I thought that we had learnt the hard lesson of not going into a conflict without fixed parameters.
This weekend, the British Government are fighting the propaganda war through the Sunday papers, giving 'exclusives' about the plan to use the latest 'bunker busting' bombs. There can only be one such use in this case and that is going after Gaddafi- i.e. regime change. There is also a very revealing comment from Major General John Lorimer on behalf of the British forces who stated: -
"For decades, Colonel Gaddafi has hidden from the Libyan people from behind these walls, spreading terror and crushing opposition."
Would it be too impudent of me to ask why such actions were not a problem for the British state, when the last Labour Government 'made friends' with Gaddafi and signed lots of oil deals at the same time?
In fairness to Britain though, they/we are nothing if consistent in their/our inconsistency towards taking the moral high ground on such matters, as Plaid's Jonathan Edwards exclusively exposed on the front page of the Observer today. For the very Saudi forces used to crush the voices of freedom and democracy in Bahrain, were trained by guess who? Yep, the good old British state. Makes you proud to be from old Blighty, eh?
