I delivered my last leaflet for this election tonight (I am skipping the usual 'bore da' leaflet this year) and am very disappointed at how little weight I have lost. I have obviously not done enough. I was delighted not to see any BNP leaflets arriving at my door. No doubt they did and were just lost in the recycling, as I would certainly not want to accuse the Royal Mail of not delivering them.
It has been a rather unusual campaign and all party activists are long overdue for a break, particularly the ones who worked for the referendum. Many Plaid volunteers have not stopped since November and are out on their feet. The now annual event of an election is stretching all political parties; at least the one's who bothered in the referendum anyway (so the Libs are excluded, obviously).
I wish all candidates, agents and activists well tomorrow and also the people involved in the counts, as things are going to take longer than usual - so coffee will be at a premium. The only people I do not wish well are of course the BNP, who I very much look forward to failing yet again in Wales. At least I will not have to share a count with a convicted racist like Griffin, like I did in 2007 in Aberafan. What a very unpleasant little man.
A CONSEQUENCE OF CHANGE...

I suppose the BNP do serve one useful function, viz. drawing several thousand voters away from UKIP in each Region.
ReplyDeleteIn Mid&West we got leaflets from Conservative, Labour, Plaid and UKIP. And in Carmarthen East we heard from Conservative (x3), Labour (x2) and Plaid (x2). We saw only one candidate (Plaid). As far as we're concerned the LibDems (as well as the other small parties) are a mere rumour.
We also got mailings from NO (x2), but none from YES.
Not only did I get a BNP leaflet, but several times saw them driving around Riverside in their campaign van, complete with megaphone "THE BNP, THE PARTY THAT SAYS WHAT THE SILENT MAJORITY THINKS" "BRITISH JOBS FOR BRITISH WORKERS" and a man filming passers by, presumably so that they can record anyone who 'persecutes' them.
ReplyDeleteI just hope we havent under-estimated their appeal and they dont pull any surprises on the night.
Emlyn,
ReplyDeleteI do get the impression that the Tories have spent huge sums on money of this campaign, using addressed leaflets where they have no hope of winning.
Anon,
My impression is that they are due for a bad one, but you are right in saying that it is very hard to tell. If they do badly in all the UK elections tomorrow, then I do not see Griffin lasting the year.
Anon,
ReplyDeleteIt is because I actively campaign against organised fascism and am proud to do so, along with all other legitimate political parties. I am no fan of UKIP but would not put them under the same umbrella as the BNP.
You are a real opposition to hope, decency the sort of society I want Wales to be, along with the vast majority of the population. I would never deny your right to have your views or to vote for them, but please don't expect me to let the BNP get away with indulging in race hate.
